what are you giving up?
“Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning it’s shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12: 1b-2
Each year I “give up” something for Lent. Sometimes it’s something I like to eat, sometimes it’s a pastime that draws me in and sucks away my time. This year I’m giving up tea. That may not seem like a big deprivation, but morning tea has really become a habit for me, so NOT having it will get my attention right away. I want my refraining from tea to be a reminder as I start each day that it is Jesus who warms my whole being, not a cup of hot tea. I want this “giving up” to be a trigger to fix my eyes on Jesus and set my mind on Him. It is an intentional giving up of something that satisfies me physically to focus on what satisfies my soul, my Lord Jesus Christ. This year the season of Lent started on February 22 with Ash Wednesday. Did you miss it or only notice Mardi Gras? (Fat Tuesday) It’s easy in this world to be drawn to have a party, rather than drawn to an inner spiritual focus. So, don’t worry if you haven’t given a thought to the fact that the season of Lent is here. It’s not too late to decide to give something up in order to remember—to remember to meditate on what Jesus did for you on the cross and prepare your heart and your spirit for the glorious joy of Easter Sunday.
T ake a moment and pray. Ask the Lord what He wants you to give up. Something may come to your mind that’s too easy—not much of an inconvenience—don’t stop with that. Dig deeper. What will get your attention, be a daily reminder to turn your eyes upon Jesus? When you think of it, you may say to yourself - "oh no, not that. I don’t want to give up that". When God said “tea” to me, I thought “oh no!” Guess what, “that” whatever it is, may be exactly the thing that God is asking you to give up until April 9th , Easter Sunday. Give it up so you can have more of Him. He loves you dearly. He wants your attention. He wants to take you deeper this season of Lent. He wants to fill you up with himself. He wants to fill your time with his truth. What you give up will fade as you get so much more He has in store for you.
Will you ask the Lord what He wants you to give up for the rest of Lent in order to receive more of what He has for you?
