cardio - the heart of the matter

Whether you subscribe to Cardio Strength & Flexibility™ classes, prefer FIT360™ workouts, or get your heart pumping in Dance Blast™, cardiovascular exercise is a vital part of your overall fitness regimen that also includes strength training and flexibility. “Cardio” comes from the Greek word “kardía” which means heart. A good cardiovascular workout has you consistently breathing faster than when you’re resting, and this results in more oxygen in your blood for your heart to pump to the rest of your body. According to the Cleveland Clinic, a leader in health and wellness information, not only can regular and consistent cardio exercise lead to a decrease in your resting blood pressure and heart rate, these basic changes can also mean your heart doesn’t have to work unnecessarily hard all the time. Maintaining a good cardio routine also helps improve good cholesterol levels while lowering blood fats, which promotes healthy circulation in the bloodstream. In other words, with consistent cardio exercise, your heart functions more efficiently with less effort, and your circulatory system is in proper working order as well. So, what amount of cardiovascular exercise qualifies as consistent and therefore beneficial? The American Heart Association recommends that adults get at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity cardio activity or 75 minutes per week of vigorous cardio activity spread throughout the week. The association also recommends that you increase the amount and intensity of your cardio exercise gradually over time to limit injuries.

Start making the intentional effort to sit less and engage in at least 150 minutes of cardio each week. The minutes will really add up as you participate in your Body & Soul® class, take daily walks in your neighborhood or your workplace, supplement your exercise regimen with FitTV™ workouts, and perhaps take up a new hobby that calls for movement. The choice is yours, and the benefits will be yours as well. The heart of the matter is the fact that cardio is important, regardless of what type of activity you choose.
