How can music help you shine?
Just the other day, when my life was feeling particularly frenzied I punched the button on my car CD player and immediately heard the song “Today” by Blanca. I began to sing along and my day was changed as I sang loudly (to myself) “You’ve got today to forgive and to live, let the light shine in. To begin, start again, you’ve got today. Turn the page, make a change, love will find a way. Don’t hesitate…wake up and give it all to Him.” I felt an instant refocus. Frenzy melted away. I decided to shine – because each today matters.
When you are feeling in a frenzy because of your busy schedule, struggling with a hard decision, concerned with what’s going on in the world, or challenged by something that seems impossible to overcome what do you do? What is your “go-to” to pull your mind out of the darkness of tough stuff into the light?
There are many good choices. Here are three that have helped me on a day by day basis to “keep my shine on.”
- Seek peace and comfort through music and the message in the lyrics of uplifting songs. I’m not talking about distracting yourself by putting on loud, crazy tunes. I am suggesting songs like the ones we use in Body & Soul – positive, uplifting music that encourage our heart and lift our spirit. Music can actually guide us to be able to shine in dark times, and in busy times of distraction and lack of direction. It is amazing how music can calm our spirit and refocus our mind—a much needed thing in today’s frenzied world.
- Seek out a friend or family member who will listen and give good advice. Allow them to shine into your life. (and don’t forget to look for opportunities where you can shine the light of love into the lives of others!)
- Seek wisdom by reading God’s Word. It brings comfort, encouragement and hope! God shines out to us through the Bible, his love letter to us. “The Lord is God, and he has made his light shine on us.” Psalm 118:27a
This devotional is a gift to you. It starts with a list of the “Shine On!” songs that we are using this session in Body & Soul. You are enjoying them as they power you up for exercise in our classes. Now you can download your favorites and with one click you can take your thoughts captive and begin to shine. And don’t forget to take time to read the encouraging devotional thoughts and Scriptures that we have included for you!
Here’s also a quick guide to go directly to the lyrics of the songs. When you read what the artists have written, the songs come alive in a new way. Knowing the words helps you sing along so that you, too, can shine on!
