Blank And Blinking: The Struggle

Friends, my struggle with the blank page is real. The blinking cursor on an all-white computer screen is like the incessant drip of a leaky faucet. It haunts me when it’s time to write devotionals for a new Body & Soul Fitness session, when it’s time to write choreography to brand new music, and yes, when I sit down to blog. It’s not that the thoughts don’t come. It’s that the thoughts are many and their organization is non-existent. Picture swarming mosquitos in the southeast, on a hot afternoon following a thunderstorm. Yes, my thoughts fly around in chaos – great in number, unorganized in nature. Now that I have you scratching at imaginary bug bites, let’s return to the task at hand: the struggle with the blank page and the blinking cursor. Even though I approach this place each time with fear and trembling (and a little bit of dread), what actually happens is quite miraculous. You see, even though I approach the page with little confidence, I am met here by One who knows what is to be written. Whether it’s devotional thoughts or exercise choreography or blog content, God has it all planned out. I know this in my head, yet I still approach this place with some degree of apprehension and uneasiness. If I’m completely honest, I have a fear that I’ve said all I have to say (which may be true, but I’m learning that God always has more for us to hear and learn).

As we turn the page from 2017 to 2018, the year lies before us like a clean slate. A blank canvas or sheet of paper, awaiting our input, our thoughts, our plans and dreams. What do you hope for this new year? What milestones and accomplishments do you anticipate? What tasks cause you a bit of anxiety as you set your 2018 goals? Friends, I’ve got good news for you. Actually, I have the best news ever! God has a good and perfect plan for you that will exceed your expectations. This is a promise.

Now, as you look ahead into this new year, may I offer a few helpful hints from one struggler to another? To help you organize these tips in your mind (think of it as mosquito repellent), just remember P.R.A.Y. Pause and take a moment to consider the blank page, without fear. Instead, anticipate how God will enable you to serve and work and create new content this coming year. Reflect on God’s faithful promises that you have experienced so far, and use these as stepping stones to build your faith. Acknowledge God’s perfect plan for your life, trusting that He knows you best and loves you the most. Yearn to learn – dig into God’s word. Learn from it and apply it to the blank page that is your life. The Bible is our instruction manual, and it’s filled with the best news ever.

At Body & Soul, our winter session begins soon and we’ll be focusing on this theme, “The Best News Ever”. Please join us in a class near you.
